During covid the balance did NOT lean towards sovereignty over safety. As we shift to an emphasis on industrial policy and a new consensus on political economy in the US I think it would behoove policy makers to expand the Federal Reserve's power to lend to states and municipalities for infrastructure development. We need preferential lending for infrastructure with low interest and very long term maturities (100 years+) with a strong emphasis on minimizing the politicization of capital as much as possible.
